I usually keep from posting things of this nature simply because it causes me pain to read such treachery... however, I must speak up this time and wish that everyone who has the capacity to help please do so!

On the night of February 24th, 2010 a person or persons broke into the Grayson Humane Society shelter. After stealing the lock box full of money, the "people" decided to release the dogs from their kennel, took a very cat aggressive dog, locked her in the room with Athena and Darrell and let her kill them both. They then turned their attention to beating the dog close to death.

Darrell & Athena lost their beautiful life because of this attack. Our hearts ache for them...

For those of you unfamiliar with this shelter in rural Leitchfield, KY - The Grayson County Humane Society/SPCA, works non-stop to find safe rescues or loving homes for the adoptable animals that, for whatever unfortunate reason, end up at the animal shelter in Leitchfield, Kentucky. They're comprised COMPLETELY of volunteers who donate their time, money, and resources.

As the shelter has an intake of almost 1,000 dogs and cats per year - and yes, some do arrive taped up in boxes- they're almost always near maximum capacity. Because of such conditions, they're constantly faced with an urgent need to move these wonderful pets to safety, in order to avoid the need for euthanasia simply due to lack of space.

Their recent fundraising efforts included the town of Leitchfield 'matching' funds. 

Great news right? HOLD that thought.. 

A tragedy occurred the other night and our friends arrived at their shelter to find the following scene:

A person or persons broke into the shelter last night and stole money and checks. Worse, they brought a very cat-aggressive dog into the office, beat her severely, and then released two beautiful cats from their cages, who died a horrible death from the poor dog, who was in agony.

The reason for this 'note' is twofold.. it is my sincere wish that you all read this information and post the hell out of it so that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Additionally, if we could throw a couple of bucks to them to help replace the missing funds and food, and bring in the 'matching' funds from the county, that would be fantastic.

While nothing can erase the trauma to the poor animals, nor erase the image embedded in peoples minds as to the scene they arrived to Thursday morning, we can perhaps band together to try to piece things back together. Give back to the people that have been so tragically hurt..
